Today, we continue with the third part of our boundaries series of articles, where we discuss what a boundaryless life looks like and highlight how the simplicity of having healthy boundaries in your life can help you build a healthy relationship with yourself. Living without boundaries is like swimming in a turbulent river without a lifeline; you risk being swept away by external forces. So, how does your life look when you do not have healthy and well-defined boundaries?

  1. Prone to Exploitation

When you lack healthy boundaries, you become vulnerable to exploitation, as you are more likely to prioritize others’ needs and wishes over your own. You will not know the level of acceptable behavior from others or from yourself and other people will exploit and take advantage of that which in the end it will ruin your mental wellbeing.

For example, imagine you’re a diligent employee known for always going the extra mile to assist your colleagues. Your accommodating nature becomes apparent to your colleague, John, who relies on you to pick up his slack. As a result, you find yourself taking on an increasing workload, working late into the evenings, and compromising your well-being to maintain a harmonious work environment. John exploits your difficulty in saying “no” and starts delegating more of his responsibilities to you. Over time, you feel overwhelmed, stressed, and resentful.

Healthy Boundaries: Setting healthy boundaries would allow you to communicate your limits to John. By clearly defining your workload and availability, you can work together to establish a more equitable distribution of tasks, ensuring that you can maintain your well-being and professional responsibilities without becoming overwhelmed. This way, you can maintain a balanced work environment while safeguarding your own needs and personal time, ultimately reducing the risk of exploitation and resentment.

2. Feeling Overly Responsible

When you have poor boundaries, you will often feel overly responsible for the emotions, actions, and well-being of others. This excessive sense of responsibility arises from a blurred distinction between your own boundaries and those of others. It can lead to taking on the unrealistic role of trying to control or influence the happiness and actions of those around you. As a result, you may struggle to say “no” to requests, neglect your own self-care, experience emotional exhaustion, and strain your relationships.

For example, if your partner is having a bad day or is upset about something, you may believe it’s entirely your responsibility to make them feel better. You might cancel your own plans to be with them, suppress your own feelings to accommodate theirs, and constantly seek ways to please them in an attempt to prevent any negative emotions on their part. This can lead to emotional exhaustion, neglect of your own needs, and even resentment, as you continually prioritize your partner’s well-being over your own.

Healthy Boundaries: Healthy boundaries can alleviate the burden of feeling overly responsible for your partner’s emotions and actions. When both partners recognize their individual responsibility for managing their emotional well-being, it leads to a more balanced dynamic. For instance, if your partner is having a bad day, rather than feeling compelled to fix it, you can offer support and empathy without sacrificing your own plans or emotions. This mutual respect for each other’s autonomy and emotional space fosters a stronger, more equal partnership. It allows both individuals to maintain their well-being, reduces emotional exhaustion, and ensures that the relationship is based on open communication and mutual support rather than one-sided emotional caretaking.

3. Poor Physical Health

Poor boundaries often result in neglecting your own self-care routines, including exercise, nutrition, and adequate sleep. Focusing on others at the expense of your own well-being can lead to physical health problems.

Let’s consider an example: Suppose you are a caregiver for an elderly family member, and your role is demanding and emotionally draining. You prioritize their needs, often at the expense of your own. This dedication may lead to a situation where you skip your regular exercise routine, opt for quick, unhealthy meals due to lack of time, and compromise your sleep by staying up late to fulfill caregiving duties. Over time, the neglect of your self-care in favor of the well-being of your family member can result in physical health problems. You may experience weight gain, reduced energy levels, and even an increased risk of health issues like high blood pressure or diabetes. These physical health problems stem from the failure to establish boundaries that allow you to balance caregiving responsibilities with your own self-care, ultimately affecting your overall well-being.

Healthy Boundaries: By establishing clear boundaries, you would prioritize self-care routines, such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep, even while fulfilling your caregiving duties. These boundaries would also enable you to seek support from other family members or outside resources, reducing the overall burden of caregiving and allowing you to maintain your own physical well-being. By balancing responsibilities and self-care, healthy boundaries would help prevent burnout and exhaustion, ensuring that you can sustain your caregiving role without compromising your physical health.


Boundaries may seem like simple concepts, but their absence can have a profoundly negative impact on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. While it’s easy to acknowledge the importance of setting boundaries, putting this into practice can be challenging. Imagine a world where saying “no” to that impulsive one-night stand saves you from years of being entangled in a toxic relationship. The absence of boundaries can trigger a chain reaction of negative experiences in your life. It’s vital to realize that understanding and implementing boundaries is a crucial step toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.
